Bringing Like-Minded Women Together

The Mitchellville-Bowie Section of The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) was founded on April 10, 1998, by Pamela Weaver & Toni Roy at the Greater Mt. Nebo AME Church. Following a Black History program at the Church where Dr. Dorothy I. Height was the guest speaker, Mrs. Weaver, and Ms. Roy decided that there should be an NCNW Section in the Northern part of the County. This began the development of gathering like-minded women to begin a new NCNW Section.

A Commitment to Change

In order to charter, a Section 50 committed women were needed. After the call went out to women in the community, 62 women and 10 youth committed to NCNW, and the paperwork was submitted to National Headquarters to petition to charter the Section. With great joy, on April 10, 1998, the Mitchellville-Bowie Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. was chartered.

Early Years of Community Engagement

In the early years, the Section conducted monthly meetings at Greater Mt. Nebo AME church and eventually began holding meetings at local County Libraries. Over the years, the Section has held and planned local College Fairs, partnered with Donna Edwards and The University of Maryland, College Park to assist with education-related events, volunteered and served as House Captain to families in need for the annual Christmas in April outreach event sponsored by Prince George’s County Social Services and have blessed countless other residents of the Prince George’s County community through our ongoing outreach events throughout the years.
